First National Confederate Flag 11 Stars all in a circle
Used from 1861-1863
Known as the “Stars and Bars Flag” and the “First National Flag,” this historic banner was first raised above the capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 4, 1861. It was selected from numerous proposed designs, submitted for consideration by the provisional Confederate Government and approved by the Provisional Confederate Congress.
Originally, it featured seven stars, symbolizing the initial seven members of the newly formed Confederacy. As more states seceded from the Union to join the Confederacy, additional stars were added to the flag. However, due to its resemblance to the Union flag and the potential for confusion on smoky battlefields, it was eventually modified to avoid misidentification on crowded battlefields.
